The Proposed Design

In 2024, the City Council voted unanimously to approve a Keller renovation to ensure the historic auditorium meets or exceeds the requirements of a modern, world-class performing arts venue.

The proposed design turns the theater inside out — enabling the surrounding environment to, itself, be theatrical.

The 21st Century Keller

The proposed design of the Keller Auditorium delivers a number of functional and performance improvements.

Instead of 180 dark days each year, the reimagined Keller will increase foot traffic through free ticket events and expanded business opportunities.

Improved Guest Experience

Expanded lobby spaces and multiple food and beverage outlets will eliminate queuing during intermissions. A year-round restaurant and bar will also be added.

Increased Accessibility

Rebuilding the auditorium itself will improve accessibility, sightlines, seating, and acoustics.

Enhanced Production

A new approach to acoustics and back-of-house AV will lead to improved sound quality and production.

Efficient Transition Between Shows

An updated loading and show setup experience will decrease the turnaround time between shows and increase the number of productions the Keller can support.

Modern Building Codes

The proposed design will meet or exceed all current building codes and features a complete seismic upgrade to a standard equal to new construction.

The Keller renovation is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in the cultural heart of downtown Portland at a point in time when our city needs to reinvent itself.

PROJECT COST & SCHEDULE

The estimated construction costs and soft costs to complete this project on an accelerated schedule, where the auditorium would be taken out of service for only 19 months, is approximately $267 million, presuming a 2027 construction start.

This project is a commitment to transform the Keller Auditorium into a 21st-century destination and an investment in Portland’s future.
